Solenoid valve is an electromechanical device that controls the flow of liquid or gas by using an electric current to activate a solenoid, which opens or closes the valve. Solenoid valves are primarily categorized by their operating method and the number of ports they have.
By operating method
- Direct-acting: These valves use the force of the solenoid alone to open or close the orifice. They are suitable for low-flow and low-pressure applications and can operate with zero pressure differential.
- Indirect-acting: These valves use a smaller “pilot” solenoid to control the system’s own pressure, which in turn operates the larger main valve. They are more energy-efficient and can handle higher flow rates, but they require a minimum differential pressure to operate.
By port and position
- Normally closed (NC): The valve is closed when de-energized and opens when power is applied.
- Normally open (NO): The valve is open when de-energized and closes when power is applied.
- 2-way valves: With two ports (one inlet and one outlet), these valves simply open or close to allow or block flow.
- 3-way valves: Featuring three ports (inlet, outlet, and exhaust), these valves can alternate flow between two different ports. They are often used to control single-acting pneumatic cylinders
